IV Acetaminophen for Post-Op Pain Control

January 5, 2018
A randomized trial examined the effect of the opioid-sparing medication on pediatric appendectomy patients.

A PPM Brief

Intravenous acetaminophen was featured in a prospective randomized trial report, published in the European Journal of Pediatric Surgery, examining its effect on postoperative pain control in children with perforated appendicitis.

With 82 patients analyzed over a four-month period, no statistically significant difference was found in time to transition from patient- or nurse-controlled analgesia to oral pain medications after laparoscopic appendectomy. The researchers’ goal was to find an opioid-sparing option postsurgery for the pediatric population.
