CDC Confirms: Opioid Dosage Guidelines Not Meant for Addiction Treatment

In an effort to reduce opioid misuse and deter abuse, agency clarifies thresholds.

A PPM Brief

According to a letter sent by the CDC to the American Society of Addiction Medicine, the dosing thresholds listed in the Centers’ 2016 Guideline for Prescribing Opioids for Chronic Pain are not meant to apply to opioid use disorder treatment.

The American Academy of Family Physicians points out that “there’s been recent concern that when implementing the guideline, some health care professionals may have applied the guideline's dosing protocol…. to buprenorphine used to treat substance use disorder.” As part of its clarification, CDC has updated its online safe dosing factsheet and removed buprenorphine from its morphine milligram equivalent (MME) conversion file.
