Pain from Stroke Reduced with Spine Therapy in New Study

Spasticity is a very common complication from stroke.

Spasticity, a condition where certain muscles are constantly being contracted, is a relatively common long-term complication of stroke, with up to 13% of post-stroke patients suffering from this severe disability.1 New results from the Spasticity In Stroke-Randomised Study (SISTERS) trial2 show that Intrathecal Baclofen Therapy (ITB Therapy) with Lioresal Intrathecal (baclofen injection) reduces spasticity-related pain and improves quality of life.

Baclofen, a common medication used to treat spasticity, can be given in the spinal cord (an area called the “intrathecal space” with spinal fluid and nerve roots), and improves hyperactive reflexes and excessive muscle tone. This type of treatment is called intrathecal baclofen (ITB), which is usually given to those who cannot handle the side effects of baclofen in its pill form.3

In the study, ITB therapy was more effective than conventional medical management (or CMM, with oral antispastic medications) over six months. A majority of ITB patients the reported satisfaction with spasticity reduction at the 6-month mark, and no patient discontinued the therapy due to treatment-related side effects.

"These study results demonstrate that, in addition to treating excessive muscle tone associated with spasticity, ITB Therapy also addresses spasticity-related pain and quality of life and should be considered when assessing treatment options for post-stroke spasticity," said study investigator Michael Creamer, DO, of Central Florida Pain Relief Centers in Orlando, FL.

SISTERS is the first study of its kind, and this demonstration of greater improvements in pain and quality of life enhance existing medical literature and data on ITB's impact on spasticity, according to a press release.4
