About Luana Colloca, MD, PhD, MS

Luana Colloca, MD, PhD, MS, is an NIH-funded associate professor at the Univ. of Maryland, Baltimore, and an honorary professor at the Univ. of Sydney School of Psychology, Australia. Dr. Colloca earned her medical degree from the University of Cantanzaro Medical School, and her doctorate of philosophy in neuroscience and master’s in bioethics from the Univ. of Turin Medical School, both in Italy. She completed post-doctoral training at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden, and held a senior research fellowship at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland. Dr. Colloca has conducted pioneering studies of the psychoneurobiological bases of endogenous systems for pain modulation in humans, including the discovery that the vasopressin system is involved in the enhancement of placebo effects with a dimorphic effect and that nocebo effects occur in a faster manner than placebo effects. IASP honored her in 2016 for her research on pain mechanisms.
